On November 6, OpenAI confirmed its acquisition of the chat.com domain, a highly valuable and historic URL now redirecting users directly to ChatGPT. The purchase of chat.com adds a significant asset to OpenAI’s portfolio, underscoring the importance of streamlined access to their services.

While the exact purchase price remains undisclosed, it’s clear OpenAI made a major investment, with the domain previously sold in 2023 for $15.5 million.

A high-value domain with a unique history

The domain chat.com has a long history, first registered in September 1996. Dharmesh Shah, HubSpot’s co-founder and CTO, acquired the domain in early 2023, reportedly paying $10 million, later confirmed by domain sales database NameBio as $15.5 million. Shah’s intention was clear—he saw the domain as a future cornerstone of conversational technology, especially with the rise of generative AI tools.

“I think Chat-based UX (#ChatUX) is the next big thing in software. Communicating with computers/software through a natural language interface is much more intuitive. This is made possible by Generative A.I.”

However, within months of the purchase, Shah sold the domain, saying only that the sale price exceeded his purchase cost, while declining to reveal the buyer.

OpenAI’s domain investment and brand strategy

The decision to acquire chat.com isn’t just about having a memorable URL—it reflects an evolving brand strategy focused on simplifying access to its offerings.

The URL change comes shortly after the company’s announcement of its “o1” series—new AI reasoning models intended to redefine OpenAI’s branding approach.

Former Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew highlighted this as a step towards “more sane names” for communicating the company’s technology and vision.

However, while chat.com now redirects to ChatGPT, this doesn’t necessarily signal a formal rebranding of the chatbot itself. OpenAI has yet to confirm if ChatGPT’s name will officially shift, leaving some uncertainty about whether this marks the beginning of a larger identity update.

The bigger picture: A trend in expensive domain investments

OpenAI’s purchase of chat.com for a reported eight-figure sum isn’t unique in today’s tech landscape. The value of prime “vanity domains” has risen dramatically, with recent examples including the AI startup Friend, which acquired friend.com for $1.8 million.

These domains, short and memorable, provide companies with instant recognition and credibility online.

In OpenAI’s case, the investment is a small fraction of its recently raised $6.6 billion, showing that such purchases are a strategic priority rather than a major financial burden.

With chat.com, OpenAI is now better positioned to capture users’ attention, providing a direct path to its AI tools and a name that aligns with its goals to bring AI-powered communication into everyday interactions.
