Isomorphic Labs, a company specializing in AI-first drug design and development, has raised $600 million in its first external funding round. The round was led by Thrive Capital, with participation from GV (formerly Google Ventures) and follow-on investment from Alphabet, its founding backer.

This marks the first time Isomorphic Labs has opened up to external investors since it was established under the Alphabet umbrella in 2021.

The capital injection aims to accelerate the company's mission to redefine the future of drug discovery using artificial intelligence.

AI Meets Biomedicine: A Sector on the Brink of Change

Isomorphic Labs sits at the intersection of life sciences and artificial intelligence, aiming to transform how new treatments are discovered and developed. The company leverages AI models to solve complex biological challenges, contributing to a broader trend where biotech increasingly merges with advanced computing technologies.

"We're excited to bring together a top-tier investor group with deep AI and life sciences expertise as we aim to transform this industry through an interdisciplinary approach."

Accelerating AI R&D and Expanding the Drug Pipeline

The newly secured funding will be used to further develop Isomorphic Labs' AI drug design engine, pushing forward frontier research in model architecture and therapeutic discovery. The company will also use the funds to expand its pipeline of internal drug candidates, particularly in oncology and immunology.

Another strategic focus will be team growth. Isomorphic Labs plans to recruit more world-class talent across its London headquarters and its office in Lausanne, Switzerland, as it scales its interdisciplinary approach to AI and life sciences.

Building on AlphaFold 3 and Industry Partnerships

Founded in 2021 by AI pioneer Sir Demis Hassabis, Isomorphic Labs builds upon foundational AI breakthroughs such as AlphaFold. In collaboration with Google DeepMind, the company released AlphaFold 3 in May 2024.

The model can predict the structure and interactions of biological molecules with high accuracy, enhancing the potential for faster and more targeted drug discovery.

Isomorphic Labs has established a robust pipeline of internal programs and partnerships. Notably, it works with Eli Lilly and Novartis, with the latter recently expanding its collaboration with the company.

Backing From Prominent Tech and Life Science Investors

In addition to Thrive Capital and GV, the round saw continued support from Alphabet, which originally incubated the company.

"At Thrive, we aim to invest in category-defining companies with singular conviction, and that has led us to Isomorphic Labs. We believe Isomorphic has earned a rare position to define a new age of drug discovery and design, and we are deeply inspired by their mission and the extraordinary progress they have made to date."
