Innovative optical display startup Gixel has raised €5 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round. The round was led by Brendan Iribe, co-founder of Oculus VR, Ted Schilowitz, former Chief Futurist at 20th Century Fox and Paramount, and FlixBus founders Jochen Engert, Daniel Kraus, and André Schwämmlein. Additional backing came from Germany's Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND) and early-stage VC firm LEA Partners.
“As a Futurist at two major movie studios, I’ve seen countless wearable display concepts. Gixel’s team and approach stand out for their real advances in resolution, form factor, and usability—they’re the one to watch.”

As AI-powered vision and voice technologies rapidly advance, tech giants are racing to deliver mainstream AR glasses. The main challenge has remained creating lightweight, energy-efficient optical displays with high-quality visuals. Gixel’s patented technology aims to overcome this barrier by providing scalable, modular solutions ideal for today’s AI glasses and tomorrow’s immersive AR experiences.
Gixel’s displays offer smartphone-level image quality, exceptional transparency when turned off, and ultra-low energy consumption, heat output, and weight. Its flexible design is engineered for mass production, allowing manufacturers to incorporate curved lenses, adjustable focal planes, and customizable fields of view—from specific zones to complete lens coverage.
Funds from this round will primarily accelerate product development, including building a fully functional prototype. Additionally, the capital will support the preparation of developer kits intended for initial pilot partnerships.
Gixel has clear future ambitions, planning a Series A round next year to scale its manufacturing capabilities and meet the increasing demand from the AR and AI wearable markets. These strategic moves will position the company to significantly expand its industry presence.
Established in 2019 by Fraunhofer optics experts Dr.-Ing. Miro Taphanel, Dr.-Ing. Ding Luo, and entrepreneur Felix Nienstaedt, Gixel began dedicated AR display development in 2021.
“We’re not just solving display challenges—we’re making the breakthrough that fnally makes wearable AI and AR real.”
Felix Nienstaedt, co-founder and CEO of Gixel
Today, the company boasts an international team of 15 specialists with expertise in display physics, nano-optics, system engineering, and precision manufacturing. Supported strongly by SPRIND as a key early investor and shareholder, Gixel is well-positioned to lead the advancement of optical display technology.
Gixel’s high-profile investors demonstrate strong industry confidence in its technological promise. Brendan Iribe, Ted Schilowitz, the FlixBus founders, SPRIND, and LEA Partners collectively underscore the potential of Gixel’s innovative displays.
