HealthAI, the Global Agency for Responsible AI in Health, is broadening its efforts to support nations in developing AI regulation for health systems.

In response to international demand, the organization is now welcoming expressions of interest from countries seeking to join its Global Regulatory Network (GRN) as Pioneer Countries.

Following the success of the initial cohort, which saw strong global engagement, HealthAI aims to launch its second wave of Pioneer Countries by Q2 2025. Further expansion is expected in 2026, ensuring wider global participation.

“We’ve seen strong interest from multiple countries, and we are deeply grateful for the support shown thus far. This initiative highlights the power of global collaboration, reinforcing the need to expand our reach. It is time for global action to ensure AI is leveraged equitably to transform health systems worldwide. Together, let us create a world where AI serves as a trusted and transformative tool for health and well-being for all.”

Dr. Ricardo Baptista Leite, CEO at HealthAI

A global commitment to equitable AI in health

This initiative reflects both the growing demand for international collaboration on AI in health and HealthAI’s commitment to inclusivity. By supporting regulatory development, HealthAI ensures that AI-driven health solutions can reach all countries, regardless of their economic standing or geographical challenges.

The Pioneer Country program aims to:

  • Reduce health inequalities by providing AI-driven health solutions to underserved populations.
  • Accelerate AI adoption through collaboration with ministries of health, regulatory bodies, and technology stakeholders.
  • Foster innovation by establishing a global network that shares best practices in AI regulation.

HealthAI encourages participation from ministries overseeing health, AI, technology, and development, as well as regulatory authorities committed to shaping responsible AI implementation in their health sectors.

Why now? The urgency of AI-driven health innovation

The global health landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, with AI unlocking new possibilities for improving accessibility, efficiency, and equity in health services. However, without global coordination, disparities in AI adoption could widen the gap between countries with advanced AI capabilities and those left behind.

By engaging governments and regulatory bodies, HealthAI ensures AI serves as a force for global health equity, rather than deepening existing disparities. The Pioneer Country program provides a structured pathway for AI integration, supporting health systems worldwide in navigating the complexities of AI-driven solutions.

This expansion presents a critical opportunity for countries to join a global movement dedicated to responsible AI governance in health, ensuring technological advancements reach those who need them most.

Next steps: how to apply

Governments, regulatory agencies, and institutions responsible for national AI governance are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest by March 31, 2025.

Selected Pioneer Countries will gain access to:

  • Implementation support for AI-driven health initiatives.

  • Strategic partnerships aimed at fostering national health innovation.

HealthAI will review applications in April 2025 and follow up with all interested parties to discuss next steps.
