Semgrep, a leader in application security, has secured $100 million in Series D funding, with Menlo Ventures leading the round. Existing investors, including Felicis Ventures, Harpoon Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and Sequoia Capital, also participated. This funding round brings Semgrep’s total investment to $204 million.

The growing need for smarter code security

Modern software development moves at an unprecedented pace, but traditional code scanners struggle to keep up. Developers and security teams frequently report that existing solutions generate excessive false positives, slow down development, and are difficult to operationalize. As organizations face increasing regulatory and security challenges, the demand for AI-powered security tools is rising.

"The era of AI for security is here, and Semgrep is uniquely positioned to help organizations secure their code without sacrificing development velocity. With the Semgrep platform, you can build an Appsec program with cost-effectiveness, security, and development speed."

Isaac Evans, CEO of Semgrep

Where the new funding will go

Semgrep plans to invest heavily in AI and automation, ensuring its platform remains at the forefront of autonomous security solutions.

A key focus will be expanding Semgrep Assistant, a recently launched AI-driven security tool that learns an organization’s development processes, prioritizes security risks, and proactively fixes vulnerabilities.

In addition, Semgrep aims to scale its engineering and product development teams, hiring world-class talent in AI and program analysis. The company also plans to expand its go-to-market efforts, broadening awareness beyond security professionals and into the broader software development community.

A fast-growing security innovator

Founded in 2017 by Isaac Evans, Semgrep began as an open-source project and has since evolved into a leading application security platform. The company offers tools that provide Static Application Security Testing (SAST), Software Composition Analysis (SCA), and secrets detection.

To support its rapid growth, Semgrep has brought in top industry talent. The company recently appointed Garrett Souza, former SVP Americas at Matillion and Enterprise Sales Leader at Snyk, as Vice President of Sales. Additionally, Mark McLaughlin, former CEO of Palo Alto Networks, has joined as an Angel Investor and Advisor.

A look at Semgrep’s investors

Semgrep has built a strong relationship with some of the world’s leading venture capital firms, all of whom have contributed to its growth. Menlo Ventures led this round, bringing their expertise in scaling high-growth software companies. Other key investors include Felicis Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and Sequoia Capital, which have all supported Semgrep’s journey from an open-source tool to an industry-leading security platform.
