The UK Government has shared its AI Opportunities Action Plan, a roadmap designed to make the nation a leader in generative AI. As part of this effort, AI hyperscaler Nscale has committed £2 billion ($2.5 billion) to expand the UK’s data centre industry over the next three years. This large-scale investment shows how working together—both public and private organisations—can help the UK stay ahead in a fast-changing AI landscape.

Nscale plans to build fixed and modular data centres across the UK, starting with its first location in Loughton, Essex. This site, going live by late 2026, can handle up to 50MW of AI compute, enough to accommodate 45,000 of the newest Nvidia GB200 GPUs. It will be equipped with advanced liquid cooling, reducing energy use while still delivering the high performance required for generative AI projects.

Nscale also prioritizes European data sovereignty, meaning it designs its UK data centres to follow regional rules and regulations. Because the company is headquartered in London, it can keep data within Europe’s legal frameworks and away from certain external regulations. This can be especially useful for organisations in regulated industries that must keep strict data-compliance standards.
By choosing areas with lots of renewable energy, Nscale aims to “create and maintain AI infrastructure without impacting Net Zero goals”. The Loughton site alone will create 500 jobs during construction and an extra 250 roles once it’s operational. This boost in employment can help local communities and nurture a more skilled workforce.
These modular data centres will also make it easier for research teams, businesses, and government institutions to use generative AI. Being able to scale quickly means that Nscale can meet growing demands while keeping costs down and performance high.

This substantial investment lines up with the UK Government’s plan to become a hub for AI innovation by 2030. As the UK focuses on a modern industrial strategy, Nscale’s project could inspire other private-sector partners to make similar moves. The company’s recent $155 million Series A funding and a plan to bring over 1.3GW of potential data centre projects to life signal big plans for AI-driven growth, both in the UK and worldwide.
