Differential Bio, an AI biotech startup based in Munich, has emerged from stealth mode, announcing a €2 million pre-seed funding round aimed at addressing critical scalability issues in biomanufacturing. The round was led by Ananda Impact Ventures and ReGen Ventures, joined by investors such as Carbon13, Climate Capital, Better Ventures, CDTM Ventures, and various prominent angel investors.

Addressing the Bottlenecks in Biomanufacturing

Biomanufacturing involves using biological organisms, such as microbial cells, to produce goods ranging from pharmaceuticals to food ingredients. Although this method offers sustainable alternatives to traditional production processes, scaling from laboratory experiments to industrial production remains a significant hurdle. Typically, developing new bio-based products requires between five and ten years, costing anywhere from $100 to $500 million.

Differential Bio aims to overcome this barrier with its innovative Virtual Scale-up Platform.

“Biomanufacturing holds the key to a regenerative future, but scaling these processes remains a major bottleneck for the industry, but we are here to change that, empowering biomanufacturers with cutting-edge tools to slash development timelines and costs, bringing bio-based products to market faster than ever before.”

Christian Spier, CEO of Differential Bio

Combining Microbiology, Robotics, and AI

The company's Virtual Scale-up Platform uniquely integrates advanced microbiology, lab automation robotics, and artificial intelligence algorithms. This integrated approach reduces the need for extensive physical experimentation, cutting both time and costs.

By simulating bioprocesses virtually, Differential Bio rapidly identifies critical factors influencing biomass growth rates, metabolite production, and cell viability, significantly enhancing production efficiency and yields.

Proven Success in Probiotics

Demonstrating its capability, Differential Bio recently tackled a complex challenge in the probiotics industry: shifting microbial strain production from animal-based to plant-based growth media. This initiative resulted in a remarkable fourfold increase in biomass yield and a 16% reduction in production costs, highlighting the platform's ability to balance sustainability with profitability.

The successful case study, presented earlier this year at a key industry conference in Copenhagen, drew significant interest.

"This project showcased the platform’s ability to handle multi-objective optimizations. We proved that sustainable biomanufacturing can enhance performance and cut costs simultaneously—no compromises required"

Dong Zhao, Chief Scientific Officer at Differential Bio

Positioning for a Sustainable Bioeconomy

Biomanufacturing is increasingly crucial, given recent global disruptions—such as supply chain volatility affecting cocoa prices, egg shortages due to avian flu, and regulatory bans on synthetic dyes over health concerns. Such events underscore the industry's need for resilient and sustainable production methods.

Differential Bio's technology positions the company to lead this transition, with global biomanufacturing expected to expand significantly over the next decades.

“Our ultimate goal is to make biomanufacturing as seamless and scalable as modern software development. This funding brings us closer to that vision, enabling us to deliver tangible value and reusable infrastructure to our clients.”

Martin Patz, CTO at Differential Bio

Visionary Team and Strategic Roadmap

Differential Bio’s founding team brings diverse expertise to the venture: CEO Christian Spier has a proven record scaling technology startups; CTO Martin Patz provides crucial experience in AI and tech innovation; and CSO Dong Zhao contributes deep bioprocess optimization knowledge from previous ventures like Nosh.Bio.

With this new funding, Differential Bio plans several strategic moves: expanding its Virtual Scale-up Platform to tackle complex bioprocesses, scaling its automated "self-driving lab" for better data generation, recruiting key talent in bioinformatics and lab automation, and onboarding new clients in rapidly growing sectors like food, cosmetics, and specialty chemicals.
