Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has officially launched its application programming interface (API), making Grok available for developers to integrate into other applications. The announcement was made by Musk on Monday, providing a link to the interface on xAI's website. This follows Musk's earlier confirmation of plans for an API in August and the company making its software weights open-source in March.
To access the API, users must sign in to their xAI accounts and apply for developer access through the profile settings by selecting "Request Access." Currently, the API offers only one model, known as "grok-beta."
Pricing for using Grok is set at $5 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
While the current offering is limited, xAI is already providing function calling, allowing Grok to be integrated with databases, search engines, and other software tools.
At this stage, the only model available via the xAI API is "grok-beta," which raises some questions. It is unclear if this version represents the latest capabilities, such as Grok-2, or if it is an earlier stage. Reports also indicate that other models for image and text analysis may be in development, but they are not available yet.
For now, developers have the opportunity to integrate Grok into external platforms, though its full potential is still unfolding.
Grok was first integrated into X (formerly known as Twitter) late last year, initially as an experimental feature. Since then, it has become fully integrated and accessible to X Premium users through a dedicated tab. The unique aspect of Grok is that it is less filtered compared to other chatbots—something Musk has described as not being overly "woke." This more relaxed approach has led to some controversial and troubling outputs.
xAI appears to be making substantial progress on multiple fronts. Recent reports suggest that the company is considering a 21-year lease on land in Memphis, Tennessee, close to its other facilities. This move follows the July activation of what Musk called "the most powerful AI training cluster in the world," supported by 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.
xAI launched its first product, Grok, in November of last year, and later introduced the Grok 1.5V visual processing model in April. In May, a filing revealed that xAI had raised $6 billion in a Series B funding round, although Musk had denied rumors of any fundraising plans back in January. He also mentioned a potential investment from Tesla, noting that any such investment would require shareholder approval.
There have been a few misconceptions circulating about xAI's business partnerships. Most recently, Musk refuted a Wall Street Journal report suggesting that Tesla was planning to license AI models from xAI, stating there was no need for the auto company to license anything from the AI firm. This was consistent with Musk's earlier comments regarding a possible Tesla investment in xAI, emphasizing that no decisions had been finalized.
Ultimately, the launch of the API marks a significant step for xAI in its mission to offer its AI services to a wider audience, inviting developers to explore Grok's capabilities and integrate them into a broad range of applications. While the details are still emerging, and it is unclear how Grok will evolve in comparison to its competitors, xAI’s momentum suggests that more features and models are on the horizon.
