AI is rapidly transforming medical imaging, helping radiologists spot diseases earlier and improve diagnostic accuracy. Now a pioneering agreement between contextflow and German health insurer IKK Südwest could mark Europe’s first official reimbursement contract for AI in radiology.

AI offers a powerful solution, serving as an extra set of eyes to detect anomalies and perform detailed image analyses. As a result, radiologists can prioritize complex cases, speed up the detection process, and deliver more precise care.
contextflow is a spin-off from the Medical University of Vienna (MUW) and the European research project KHRESMOI. Founded in July 2016 by AI and engineering experts, the company works on bringing advanced machine learning to clinical use.
Its core product, contextflow ADVANCE Chest CT, helps radiologists analyse crucial lung issues—including lung cancer, ILD, and COPD—with enhanced speed and confidence.
Now, contextflow’s agreement with IKK Südwest—facilitated by the Healthy Hub initiative—paves the way for reimbursed AI-driven lung cancer detection.
The goal: reduce unnecessary biopsies, cut down on follow-up scans, and enable radiologists to catch tumors up to one year sooner.
This partnership signals a shift in how insurers and healthcare providers view AI: no longer just experimental, but a necessary tool for improving care and controlling costs.

As part of the new model, IKK Südwest will pay a fee per chest CT scan, shared between contextflow and imaging providers. This approach recognizes the tangible benefits of AI in routine workflows—particularly in lung cancer screening programs that often struggle with limited resources.

2024 was a pivotal year for contextflow, highlighted by partnerships with Bayer, Blackford Analysis and NeoLogica.
The company also introduced new features such as malignancy scoring and incidental pulmonary embolism detection—tools that further solidify AI’s role in everyday medical imaging.
Recognition came in the form of a spot on Newsweek’s World’s Best Digital Health Companies for 2024, as well as #18 on Trend.at’s list of top 100 Austrian startups.
