At AWS re:Invent, Amazon's annual cloud computing event, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced new features for Amazon Aurora and Amazon DynamoDB.
These new capabilities are built to help businesses handle heavy workloads across multiple Regions, ensuring reliable data, fast response times, and the ability to work smoothly, whether customers use SQL or NoSQL databases.
Amazon Aurora DSQL is a new type of database that doesn't require servers to be managed manually. It allows businesses to build reliable and always-available applications. Aurora DSQL ensures data is consistent across different locations, works with PostgreSQL (a popular database), and is four times faster for reading and writing data compared to other similar databases. This means developers can create strong, resilient applications without worrying about performance issues or handling complex infrastructure.
AWS customers, including Autodesk, Electronic Arts, Klarna, QRT, and Razorpay, are already exploring Aurora DSQL for their rapidly growing businesses.

Amazon Aurora is a cloud-based database that combines the power of a high-end commercial database with the flexibility and cost savings of an open-source one.
Aurora DSQL goes a step further, solving many of the challenges faced by businesses with globally distributed applications.
With Aurora DSQL, customers no longer have to choose between low latency (fast response times) and SQL compatibility (using standard database language). Aurora DSQL is the fastest distributed SQL database, offering 99.999% availability across multiple regions, unlimited scalability, and no infrastructure management.
Its active-active setup and automated recovery make sure that applications are always available, with data synced across all regions reliably. Aurora DSQL's serverless design automatically scales to handle demand without requiring complex database configurations or upgrades.
To achieve multi-Region strong consistency with minimal delays, AWS has redesigned how databases handle transactions. Aurora DSQL separates transaction processing from data storage, only checking transactions when they are finalized and synchronizing them across regions at the same time.
For global synchronization, Aurora DSQL uses the Amazon Time Sync Service, which relies on satellite-connected atomic clocks to keep everything accurate to the microsecond. This makes sure that every operation on the database happens in the correct order across all Regions.
For example, Razorpay, a major fintech company in India, plans to use Aurora DSQL for new solutions to help them build reliable, globally scalable applications. Aurora DSQL's ability to maintain strong consistency across regions is especially important for the financial sector, where accurate data and reliability are crucial.
Amazon DynamoDB was the first fully managed, serverless NoSQL database that transformed internet-scale applications by simplifying operations and ensuring single-digit millisecond performance. With DynamoDB global tables, customers can enjoy a multi-Region, multi-active database offering 99.999% availability.
AWS has now integrated the technology behind Aurora DSQL into DynamoDB, adding multi-Region strong consistency to its existing capabilities, including scalability and zero infrastructure management.
Reltio, an AWS customer managing over 9 billion customer profiles, plans to leverage DynamoDB's new strong consistency feature to meet the resilience requirements of its growing customer base.
