Physical Intelligence, a startup building core software for robots, has announced it raised $400 million in early-stage funding. The round was led by Jeff Bezos, alongside well-known venture capital firms like Thrive Capital, Lux Capital, and OpenAI, bringing the company's valuation to $2 billion.
Physical Intelligence aims to create a generalist brain for robots that can be applied across various machines and tasks, unlike traditional software tailored for specific robots. The company's co-founder and CEO, Karol Hausman, described their goal as building "a single generalist brain that can control any robot." The ambitious undertaking involves creating a system that eliminates the need for specialized programming for each machine.
Building a generalist AI for robots is no easy task. It requires gathering vast data sets to simulate and understand how different robots interact with the physical world.
To overcome the lack of existing information, Physical Intelligence is compiling its own data and leveraging advancements in AI models, particularly those that can interpret visual data to assist with robotic functions.
The world of robotics AI is becoming increasingly crowded. Other key players in the industry include Skild, which focuses on general-purpose robotics; Figure AI, also backed by Jeff Bezos; and Covariant, which primarily focuses on industrial applications. The market interest in robotics AI is expected to grow, with major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia investing billions in the space.
Last week, Physical Intelligence published a paper showcasing their software—named π0 or pi-zero—which was able to enable robots to carry out diverse tasks like folding laundry, clearing tables, and bagging groceries. These demonstrations highlight the progress Physical Intelligence has made towards developing versatile robotic capabilities.
The funding of AI and cloud companies across the US, Europe, and Israel is projected to reach $79.2 billion by the end of 2024. This surge indicates a robust interest in advancing AI technologies, including robotic AI. Among the co-founders of Physical Intelligence are some notable industry figures: Sergey Levine, a professor at UC Berkeley; and Lachy Groom, a former executive at Stripe.
Even Elon Musk has ambitious plans for humanoid robots, recently projecting that there could be 10 billion humanoid robots by 2040, each priced between $20,000 and $25,000.
Tesla, along with companies like Physical Intelligence, is contributing to this expanding sector, positioning robotics as one of the next major innovations in AI.
According to Karol Hausman, the concept of a "generalist" brain means that Physical Intelligence's software is not tailored to any single machine. Instead, it offers foundational capabilities, like a more primitive model akin to GPT-1, which allowed basic chatbot capabilities. The company's software is still in its early stages compared to more advanced systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT, but there is potential for breakthroughs sooner than expected.
Amazon has a significant vested interest in robotics as a means of driving operational efficiency, with Jeff Bezos leading the investment in Physical Intelligence.
The company's goal of universal robot AI aligns well with Amazon's logistics and automation strategy, potentially reducing costs and improving fulfillment speed.
OpenAI's involvement also demonstrates a growing interest in moving beyond virtual environments into physical automation and application.
